The short version

Remote streaming: the key difference (Plex plans page, checked 2026-10-24)

According to plex.tv/plans:

Prices (USD, from Plex's own pages, checked 2026-10-24; Plex notes "Exact pricing in other currencies may vary"):

The remote-streaming requirement started on 29 April 2025: "To stream remotely starting on April 29, 2025, you will need a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass subscription on your account or the admin of the Plex Media Server from which you stream will need a Plex Pass subscription" (Plex blog). A 29 April 2026 update to that post extended the requirement to more apps and platforms (e.g. Fire TV, smart TVs, game consoles).

Caution: Plex prices and plans have changed several times since 2025. Check plex.tv on the day you decide.
